As we step into 2025, I'm reminded of a practice I began in my high school Finance class last year. There, I first learned the art of setting goals and intentions, inspired by the book I Want More Pizza. This practice showed me how clear goals and intentions can transform our approach to life. Let me share why this matters and outline my goals for the year ahead.
Why Goals and Intentions Matter
Goals and intentions serve distinct but complementary purposes:
Goals are specific, measurable achievements. They define what you want to accomplish, like "Save $10,000 by December" or "Complete a half-marathon."
Intentions shape how you want to live and the mindset you bring to daily life, such as "I intend to practice mindfulness every day" or "I will prioritize kindness in my relationships."
By combining goals and intentions, you create a balanced approach to growth—one that honors both the destination and the journey.
Reflecting on the Past Year
Before setting new goals, it's vital to reflect on the past year. In 2024, I celebrated several wins: implementing better time management habits, deepening relationships, and advancing my financial literacy. I faced challenges too, particularly in maintaining consistent exercise routines. Yet these setbacks taught me resilience and adaptability.
My 2025 Goals and Intentions
I've outlined goals in five key areas of my life:
Financial
Goal: Save $20,000 by the end of the year to launch my first business in Indonesia.
Intention: Spend wisely, focusing on priorities and minimizing unnecessary expenses.
Academics
Goal: Enroll in a college business administration program.
Intention: Stay curious and actively seek knowledge about building and managing a successful business.
Relationships (Family, Friends, Partner)
Goal: Reconnect with all my cousins and friends in Bali by February.
Intention: Foster deeper relationships through active listening and meaningful quality time.
Personal (Internal: Spiritual/Emotional/Mental)
Goal: Build discipline by meditating for 15 minutes daily to enhance mindfulness and reduce stress.
Intention: Embrace each day with gratitude and self-compassion.
Personal (External: Physical)
Goal: Gain 8 pounds by December 2025 through consistent effort and healthy habits.
Intention: Prioritize my health and fitness, focusing on building strength and honoring my body.
Tips for Setting Goals and Intentions
When crafting your goals, make them Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound (SMART). Instead of "I want to save money," specify "I will save $500 monthly starting in January."
Intentions complement these structured goals by guiding your mindset and behaviors, helping you stay grounded as you progress.
