Transition to Transformation
Written by Annie L.
For those navigating the challenges of starting over in a new world, so that they can find strength in their journey, embrace change, and discover a sense of belonging along the way.
In the small village in China where I grew up, life felt boundless and free. I would beg my grandpa for a dollar after school to buy snacks, and my days always ended in laughter with friends. The air was fresh, the sound of chickens clucking filled the background, and I wandered as if the world had no limits. Life was simple, and I felt unstoppable.
Everything changed when we moved to America. On our first night in the new home, my mom said something that has stayed with me ever since: “Today is the first and last day I’ll wash your hair for you.” At the time, I didn’t fully understand her words, but they marked the moment I had to grow up. The carefree girl from the village had to adapt to a world filled with responsibilities, routines, and expectations I wasn’t prepared for.
The transition was overwhelming. The language barrier made me feel invisible, even though I desperately wanted to belong. School became a daily struggle—a blur of unfamiliar faces, incomprehensible words, and moments of humiliation when I made mistakes. I felt isolated, unsure of myself, and homesick for a life that seemed impossibly far away.
Over time, I noticed a shift within me. The fearless, playful girl I had been was replaced by someone who carefully measured every word, terrified of saying the wrong thing. I became quieter, more cautious. Every interaction felt like a test I was afraid of failing. I longed for the confidence and joy that once came so naturally.
Things began to change in fourth grade when I met a girl who was struggling with her English as much as I had been. I recognized her fear and frustration—it mirrored my own experience. Without hesitation, I decided to help her. My English was far from perfect, but together we stumbled through conversations, shared small victories, and built a connection. What I didn’t realize at the time was that by helping her, I was helping myself too.
That friendship unlocked something in me. It reminded me of the power of connection and the strength that comes from kindness. For the first time since moving, I felt like I could be myself again. I began to reach out more, building friendships with people who didn’t just see my struggles—they saw me. These relationships became a source of support, helping me rediscover the sense of belonging I thought I had lost.
Moving to America forced me to adapt in ways I never imagined, but it also allowed me to rediscover myself. The challenges I faced shaped me into someone more resilient and compassionate. They taught me that growth often comes from the moments we feel most out of place and that every small step forward matters.
Looking back, I see that the transition wasn’t just about leaving one world behind for another—it was about learning how to build a life that could hold space for both.
As Robin Sharma wisely said, “Change is hard at first, messy in the middle, and beautiful at the end.” Those words ring true. What began as a struggle to fit in transformed into a journey of growth and self-discovery. I’ve learned to embrace where I came from and where I’m headed. Each small step has brought me closer to the person I was meant to become.
Feeling lost in a new world is never easy, but it’s through these struggles that we find strength and growth. Whether you’re navigating change, building resilience, or discovering your place, your story matters.
